What is a tealight candle?

A tea light candle is a small, typically circular candle enclosed in a metal or plastic cup or container. It is designed to be burned in a special holder, often made of heat-resistant material, such as glass or metal. Tea light candles are relatively small and shallow, usually measuring about 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in diameter and around 0.6 inches (1.5 cm) in height.

Tea light candles are commonly used for decorative and practical purposes. They provide a soft, ambient light and are often used to create a cozy or romantic atmosphere. They are frequently employed in decorative centerpieces, in aromatherapy and spa settings, during religious or spiritual ceremonies, or simply as a source of gentle illumination.

The name "tea light" originated from their traditional use in teapot warmers, where they were used to keep tea warm. However, they are now used more broadly for various purposes beyond tea-related applications. Tea light candles typically have a burn time of a few hours, depending on their size and quality.

Why IBHI created a tealight holder with Lotus?

The lotus holds immense cultural, religious, and symbolic significance in India. It is deeply ingrained in various aspects of Indian life, including spirituality, art, literature, and mythology. The lotus is often revered for its beauty, purity, and spiritual connotations. Here are some of the key reasons for the relevance of the lotus in India:

  1. Spiritual Symbolism: The lotus is considered a sacred symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. It represents spiritual purity, enlightenment, and the emergence of the divine from the depths of ignorance. Just as the lotus grows in muddy waters but remains untainted by them, it symbolizes the ability to rise above worldly attachments and desires.

  2. Divine Depictions: Many Hindu deities, including gods and goddesses, are depicted sitting or standing on lotus flowers. Lord Vishnu, for example, is often shown reclining on a lotus, emphasizing his transcendental nature and spiritual dominion.

  3. Chakras and Energy Centers: The lotus is associated with the chakra system, where each chakra is often depicted as a lotus with varying numbers of petals. The opening of these lotus petals corresponds to the activation and balancing of the respective energy centers in the body.

  4. Artistic Symbolism: The lotus is a popular motif in Indian art, architecture, and sculpture. Its graceful and intricate form is often depicted in temples, palaces, and other structures, reflecting its spiritual and aesthetic significance.

  5. Literary and Mythological References: The lotus is mentioned in various ancient texts, epics, and scriptures. Its symbolism is deeply woven into Indian mythology, where it signifies creation, purity, and divine transformation.

  6. Cultural Significance: The lotus is frequently used in traditional Indian ceremonies, rituals, and festivals. It is often offered in worship and is associated with auspicious beginnings.

  7. National Symbol: The lotus is the national flower of India. Its selection as the national flower reflects its cultural, spiritual, and historical significance in the country.

  8. Medicinal and Herbal Uses: Various parts of the lotus plant have been used in traditional Indian medicine systems like Ayurveda. The plant is believed to have therapeutic properties and is used in remedies for various ailments.

  9. Environmental and Ecological Value: The lotus plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of aquatic ecosystems. Its ability to thrive in muddy waters while producing pristine blooms symbolizes resilience and adaptability.

  10. Positive Attributes: The lotus's journey from the mud to the surface and its ability to bloom with beauty even in adverse conditions serve as metaphors for qualities like perseverance, optimism, and purity.

Overall, the lotus serves as a powerful symbol that encapsulates India's spiritual heritage, artistic expression, and cultural identity. Its significance is a testament to the enduring role of nature in shaping India's cultural narratives and its people's outlook on life.
